Pre Production Assignment 2

Pre Production Assignment 2

To complete the assignment which I have been given I need to make a 1 minute film with only 1 actor and 1 location. It is to be showcased at the UKCineFest Film Festival. As part of the selection process they have asked for a Pre -Production folder and a self-reflective review to be submitted alongside the final film. These Pre-Production stages will include a professionally formatted script, a storyboard, script breakdown sheet, a budget which is what it would cost in the real world, a risk assessment and clearances ( Actors and Locations ).

Below are 3 images which show a finished Risk Assessment which I have completed.

Below is another completed Pre-Production stage being a Script Breakdown sheet.

Another Pre production template I have been asked to complete for my assignment is a professionally formatted script, below is my completed script.

Below is another piece of Pre Production work which shows how much the equipment would cost over a 4 day period.

Below is another piece of Pre Production work which shows the cameraman exactly where I want him to shoot and a little sentence on the bottom what that scene is about, this is the storyboard.

Finally the last piece of pre-production for me to do is the actors clearances which is myself, the contributor release form is completed and shown below - this is in case the actor then decides they don't want it to go public yet the company can decide whether or not to as they will win in a legal case.

Conclusion

In this assignment I was told to complete the following - a professionally formatted script, storyboard, script breakdown sheet, projected budget for real world costs, risk assessment and clearances e.g. actors, and of course make my film as well as edit it and put a soundtrack over it, I was also tasked to create a production diary of what I done in the weeks of this assignment. I believe that I have done all of these tasks to the best of my ability.

Production Diary

Week 1 - I am thinking of ideas about what my short film is going to be about. I have had a look at YouTube videos to help me think of ideas.

Week 2 - I have booked the equipment which I need to complete my assignment for the 16th of December and I will be returning this equipment on the 19th of December.

Week 3 - I have now decided what my short film is going to be about. I also have now started on the pre production templates both the script breakdown sheet and the script making software.

Week 4 - I have now changed the date of when I am shooting, it will be 9th of January.

Week 5 - I have now completed all of the Pre Production papers meaning I now know what I'm doing to complete the task which was given to me.

Week 6 - I have now shot my film and have started to edit it.

Week 7 - I have now completed my film, edited it and uploaded it to YouTube, meaning I have now completed my assignment.

Understanding Creative Media Assignment 2

Understanding the ethical and legal considerations when working in the creative media sector

The college Media Mill is looking to produce an online information guide for prospective students who want to find out more about the creative media sector. To complete the task which has been given to me I need to produce the second chapter for the online information guide. The purpose of this assignment is to produce an online information guide for media students who are interested in pursuing a career in one of the creative media sectors. The chapter which I will be writing will be about ethical and legal considerations when working as a producer in the creative media sector.

There is a difference between something being ethically wrong and legally wrong, ethically wrong is something which isn't against the law but something which isn't being took in a considerate manner, whereas legally wrong is something which is against the law therefore you could possibly go to prison.

Many producers need to understand the legal considerations when working in the creative sectors. Copyright is a huge issue the media industry faces. Legal protection is advised so that their original material can't be used in somebody else's name. However copyright can only be applied on the application of the idea, not the idea itself. It is also illegal and in my opinion can be ethically wrong to discriminate anyone on grades of race, sex and disability when recruiting in the workplace. National security is another legal issue filmmakers face. Filmmakers and producers must be aware of certain laws such as the official secrets act 1989 and the prevention of terrorism act, there was a man named ' Damian McBride ' he worked in HM Customs and Excise, he joined Her Majesty's Treasury while Gordon Brown was Chancellor of the Exchequer, and after coming to the attention of Gordon Brown he then became the Head of Communications at the UK Treasury, remaining there until 2008. In 2009, he resigned after it became apparent that he was leaking information to other members of the labour party discussing private lives and their spouses of the Conservative Party.

There are many laws including the secret service act in the creative media sector, one of these is Libel Law, libel law is to publish something in print which is not true or may harm that persons reputation and may bring them hate towards them. It also must be a statement which claims to be a fact and is not clearly identified as an opinion. The link below shows Libel law in action, People who tweeted photos allegedly of child killer Jon Venables are being charged with contempt of court. It's the latest in a long line of cases that suggest that ordinary social media users need to have a grasp of media law.
  • 46% of 18- to 24-year-olds are unaware they can be sued for defamation if they tweet an unsubstantiated rumour about someone, according to research for law firm Wiggin
  • That compares to 17% of over-65s
  • ComRes interviewed 2,047 British adults online from 5 to 7 December 2012

Another law in the creative media sector is privacy, the privacy law is their to protect a persons right to be left alone, as they're allowed to lead their own lives without other people's scrutiny. An example of this was the BBC ' Sachsgate ' scandal - A prank call on The Russell Brand Show in 2008 involved a series of voice messages left by comedian Russell Brand and TV presenter Jonathon Ross on the answering machine of the actor Andrew Sachs. BBC Radio 2 decided it would be okay to allow it on an episode of The Russell Brand Show. In the episode, Brand and Ross called Sachs as a guest to interview on-air when Sachs failed to answer the phone, they're heard leaving a series of messages on his answering machine which included comments about Russell Brand's relationship with Andrew Sachs' granddaughter Georgina Baillie. It then came out in the news reported from The Mail on Sunday on the 26th of October 2008, both Russell Brand and the controller of Radio 2 ( Lesley Douglas ) resigned from the BBC. Jonathon Ross was suspended without pay for 12 weeks on the 30th of October and the BBC was fined £150,000 by Ofcom. Both presenters were criticised by a number of members of Parliament, including the Prime Minister at the time being Gordon Brown. Ofcom also have a broadcasting code which is to do with protecting the under eighteens and these rules are not letting any material which seriously impair the physical, mental or more development of people under the age of eighteen, meaning this shouldn't have been allowed to be released to the public as it is technically about sexual content.

Next is the Copyright law - intellectual property is something that is unique to you if physically created, for example an idea that is not your intellectual property but your words are. Copyright is a type of intellectual law that protects your work. By knowing your rights and having the correct type of protection you can stop people stealing or copying :

  • The names of your products or brands
  • your inventions
  • the design or look of your products
  • things you write, produce or make.
An example of the copyright law is in the film ' The Hangover Part 2 ' the character Stu played by Ed Helms has a tattoo on his left side of his face, the exact same tattoo as Mike Tyson has, and as it says above ' things you write, produce or make ' is classed as copyright therefore the creator of the tattoo ' S. Victor Whitmill ' placed a copyright infringement case upon Warner Bros Studios, however in the end Whitmill decided to no longer go into the matter - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/warner-bros-settles-hangover-ii-203377.

Another law which is not just in the creative media sectors but every kind of job nowadays is the health and safety act, to make sure nothing occurs it is best to follow all the health and safety laws, an important one is assess and manage risk and by doing this completing a risk assessment. For example, take the time to systematically look at your activities, decide what hazards they present, assess the risk of people being exposed to those hazards and find ways to eliminate them or reduce them. Finally, make sure you define responsibilities so everyone knows what they're supposed to be doing.

Finally the last law to look at in the creative media sectors is the obscene publications act, the next paragraph is from https://www.iwf.org.uk/hotline/the-laws/criminally-obscene-adult-content/obscene-publications-act-1959-and-1964

The law makes it an offence to publish, whether for gain or not, any content whose effect will tend to "deprave and corrupt" those likely to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it. This could include images of extreme sexual activity such as bestiality, necrophilia, rape or torture.

Obscene Publications Act 1959An Act to amend the law relating to the publication of obscene matter; to provide for the  protection of literature; and to strengthen the law concerning pornography.

There are several different media ethics which have been published, one of these is a game called Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 where a campaign mission tells you to go into an airport and start shooting civilians with a gun. This can be classed as a media ethic as it is causing harm to innocent people and therefore can represent a stereotype on the person killing the civilians. Another example of a media ethic is the film Argo, the film is based on an undercover CIA agent who launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S hostage crisis in Iran in 1980. This film is banned in Iran due to its negative portrayal of Iran ( offending ). Finally another example of a media ethic is in Kenya, Wolf Of Wall Street was banned due to its sexual scenes, nudity, alcohol and drugs. Kenya may have banned this as it is a bad representation towards drugs and alcohol due to Jordan Belfort ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) driving whilst on drugs and then crashing his car, therefore losing his daughter and making him fight to get her back, The Wolf Of Wall Street made $392 million in total whereas Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has made over $1 billion - After five days of sales, the game had earned revenue figures of $550 million worldwide. As of January 18, 2010, it has taken over $1 billion in sales. Activision also claims that Modern Warfare 2 had 8 million players online within the first five days, constituting the largest 'army' of players in the world.

It is very important for producers to understand why ethical considerations matter because if you're a director of a film and you are making it on computer hacking e.g. hacking bank details and therefore taking all your money, a lot of young teenagers may find this a great film as they know it is very unlikely to happen however the older generation who may watch this movie may feel distraught and not feel comfortable after it, if you don't consider this then you aren't going to get the best possible outcome in making money on Box Office releases. Make sure you also don't cause offence to anyone, e.g. if it's a comedy TV series and there is a scene where it's portrayed to be about sexism, many people will find this offensive, an example of this is in the office as shown in a video below.

Finally it is advised that you follow guides such as Ofcom or BBFC, as these are very big companies who have the last word on your TV show / film, as they get to say if it goes on air or is released to the public or not as well as the time it is allowed to go out to the public e.g. if it's adult based it will be after 9PM, and for BBFC they get to decide what rating the film is, if it's allowed to be released at all and if there needs to be any certain cuts in it.

Conclusion - I believe that with the help of this blog post I now have helped the college media mill about an information guide for prospective students who want to find out more about the creative media sector and I also think that I have included both ethical and legal considerations when working in the creative media sectors as well as examples for all of them.

Music Video Assignment

Music Video

I have been asked by the college to put together an online blog post detailing some of the purposes of music videos as well as their styles, conventions and techniques. The college's record label is looking to diversify into full packages that would include music videos for their signed artists.

Music videos can be used in many different ways, one of these is to promote various things, one of these things can be themselves as a band or as an individual, many people in the music industry may do this when they change their type of style or music. The biggest example of this is Miley Cyrus, she was best known for her acting in Hannah Montana on the Disney channel. In the past couple of years she has been trying to change her style of music therefore making herself a bigger star. When she brought out ' We Can't Stop ', it got more than 10.7 million views in the first 24 hours, making the public forget when she was the actress on the Disney channel. 3 years later and it now has 730 million views. Another example of her style is her music video and song ' Wrecking Ball ' which has 867 million views.

Promotional music videos' purpose is to promote the artist's self image and music. Many individuals in the music industry create these videos to show the audience that they have changed in terms of style and music. For example Miley Cyrus is now classed as a bolder artist. For example in her song ' We can't stop ', the main concept of the music video is partying, being young and people having their first taste of sexual and drug discovery. When viewers see this, they then think of her as being more provocative and sensual.

Financial

In the beginning of the reality TV show ' The X Factor ', in the beginning stages there were five male singers who all had the initial aim of becoming solo artists however, they failed to progress to the next stage of the show, however they grouped together to make the famous boy band called One Direction. Although they didn't win the competition, Simon Cowell saw a bright future ahead of them and therefore signed them onto his record label Syco music. The music video ' Night Changes ' was released on November 2014 and now has 225 million views. The video is a point of view of going on a date with all five members of the group however in five different locations, reflecting the group members' different personalities and styles. Capturing them singing and looking at the camera is extremely effective as it gives the impression that the singers are speaking directly to the viewers ( most girls ). The main purpose behind this production is to make money from their album ' Four ' as this was their biggest hit at the time.

Extension Of Outlets

Making music videos is one things however the next step is to actually broadcast the. Due to high demand for music videos on big companies like Sky, they now have a designated section just for music. Music channels such as MTV, Viva and many more are the source of music videos and celebrity drama. Production companies pay the channels to play the videos on TV and the promotion boosts up the sales and recognition of the artist. Another type of outlet is CD and DVD sales as music videos can also be sold on DVD. Sometimes there is a special promotional pack including the soundtrack for example the Christmas period. Some CD albums put music videos on as an extra DVD to play, meaning the songs get more recognition. CD sales are increasing through use of online companies such as Apple Music, iTunes and Spotify. However you can find the music videos online for free where as iTunes you have to pay £0.99 - £2.50. Or a monthly subscription e.g Spotify or Apple Music, which helps pay for new music videos. Most people like to watch music videos for free therefore they might watch a lot of YouTube, in this case you can watch them whenever and wherever you like as they're free, as long as you have internet.

Synergy

Synergy is where two products or companies come together to make a video, and use the video as a platform to give them both success where they deserve it. For example a music video maybe made to increase the publicity for a film, however it also may prove successful in its own right. One example is the music video ' You know my name ' by Chris Cornell for the film ' Casino Royale ' a very famous James Bond film. As it was a very successful film it helped to increase sales of the song and the soundtrack and to this day it still is popular and won Chris Cornell many awards. Another example of synergy is if a video is shown on YouTube and is getting a lot of views or was predicted to get a lot of views then companies may pay to advertise on the video to help improve their publicity.

Producers' strategies

There are three potential ' producers ',
The major label
The independent music label
The Artist

A major label is for a mainstream artist who generally sells lots of records and is high in the top charts for their genre in music, goes on tour and has merchandise. They have large budgets for music videos or other promotional material. Main stream music like R and B or Pop, for example Rhianna is signed with Roc Nation.

An independent music label would be a smaller budget overall, a different type of music genres for example indie, the target audience will be completely different compared to the major label.

The artist - may decide to make the video themselves, often unsigned, it can be used as a promotional tool to express to the audience how much he wants his chance, however this is usually due to a low budget. Cost effective technical equipment makes it easier to access, produce and distribute material.

Styles:

Every artist has their very own style of how they perform, as I have explained earlier in the blog, Miley Cyrus was once just an actress for Hannah Montana, now she is a multi million making artist. As you can see below this is a screen shot of how much Miley Cyrus is actually worth.

A lot of the popular music genres, e.g. Pop and R & B is where a lot of similar type of styles are in the music industry, for example Rihanna could be compared to Beyonce as they are in the same type of genre and are very similar to each other, as you can see below there are two pictures of them both, they dress quite similar.

However when it comes to music videos, Rihanna and Beyonce could be compared to differently, as you can see below there are two music videos, one from each artist. Rihanna is a lot more focused on herself whereas in Beyonce's you have the whole balcony as well as the background to the left of her whilst she is singing the song.

Conventions

Especially in the Pop side of the music industry the genre Pop has now came across to the audience mostly about drugs, sex and alcohol or relationships. Many songs in the charts right now will all have something to do with one of the three, for example if I am listening to Capital FM on the radio, I may listen to 5 completely different artists in the space of 30 minutes however the song meanings and lyrics in the songs can possibly be very similar to each other.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/singles - this is a link to the BBC top 40 charts.

Just a couple of examples, ' I would like ', ' Touch ', ' Sensual ', ' Say you won't let go ' and many more of the top 40 songs in this type of genre are all leading to either drugs, sex, relationships or alcohol, this is where this kind of genre is now at.

This can be compared to a completely different type of genre in the music industry being country music, this is totally different to Pop, country music is a form of popular music originating from the rural southern parts of the US. It's a mixture of ballads and dance tunes played characteristically on fiddle, banjo, guitar and pedal steel guitar, as well as many artists who also sing.

Techniques

Many music videos in the pop genre are all filmed similarly, for example something always happens when the music changes beat your camera is going to move onto something else, this is called cutting to the beat. When this happens the camera movements and angles are also going to change, as it is more noticeable for the camera to change angles when the beat has also changed. A good example of cutting to the beat is ' Rolling in the Deep ' sung by Adele, I really like how when the lyrics ' crystal clear ' you get the many glasses of water, which also vibrate in the next scene.

Conclusion

In this blog I believe that the college's record label can now look more promptly into diversifying into full packages which will include music videos for their signed artists, I think this blog post details some of the purposes a music video does as well as their styles, conventions and techniques.

Communication Product Placement

Product Placement

What is product placement? - Product placement is when companies get in contact with either big film companies e.g Paramount to then get a product placed in their movie, there are products from Transformers 1 where Xbox to Mountain Dew to HP and many car producers are shown.

Is it allowed on UK TV? - Product placement is allowed on Films, TV series and Soaps however it is not allowed on the news, religious affairs or children's programmes. They also cannot be placed in consumer advice programmes made for UK audiences.

Where can't products be placed? - Children's programmes, religious affairs or news.

What products can't be placed? - Cigarettes along with medicines that are available only on prescription, can't be product placed in any programmes. Alcoholic drinks, gambling products, food and drinks that are high in fats, salts or sugar.

How would you know if a programme contains product placement? - Have the ' P ' logo shown below.

What products do you think would be advertised on your TV show? - On my TV show I think sports drinks or protein shakes would be the best suited as it would fit into the category of the TV show and many members of the audience.

Three online articles which can be used to help my research for my TV show are shown below, the website http://www.explainthatstuff.com/digitalcameras.html can help me obtain research on how cameras are used in industrial purposes or how they're used to film TV shows or movies, for example When you want to take a photograph with a film camera, you have to press a button. This operates a mechanism called the shutter, which makes a hole (the aperture) open briefly at the front of the camera, allowing light to enter through the lens (a thick piece of glass or plastic mounted on the front).

In my opinion, a good TV series should make you want to watch more and more of the same TV series, for example one of my best TV shows I have ever watched is Breaking Bad, it's about a Chemist teacher at a high school and one of his ex-pupils and they start making meth together to make money, there becomes many dilemmas which eventually they get over. Another TV series I love is Prison Break, two brothers Michael Schofield and Lincoln Burrows break out of prison with a couple of friends and eventually become free.

Photography Assignment

Photography Assignment

I have been asked by a local artist who is interested in diversifying their practice into the field of photography by helping them understand and inform them about the different types of photography. They would then like me to demonstrate one application.

There are many types of photography which can be used in very different circumstances from Advertising and Promotional to Documentary and Architectural.

Advertising / Promotional Photography

Advertising photography is any photography in which the end result is intended to facilitate a business venture, meaning advertising photography is done to create money for the client, in this case as you can see below, both McDonald's and Heineken have hired a advertising photographer to get there sales up.

First of all you need to establish expectations and requirements with your client otherwise you have no idea what they're looking for and you might get the wrong end of the stick. Next is to understand the intended use of the images, this is for pricing and execution. The price you may quote may depend on where the images are going, for example you may ask for a bigger amount of money if your image is going to be used on a nation wide advertisement compared to a local shops poster. This is known in the industry as license/usage rights. Quote reasonable and realistically, otherwise you aren't going to have many job offers on the table if your quotes are sky high for a very small business. Finally is the sign offs, make sure you insist that the man or woman in charge has to be there to say that they're happy with the images you have given them in that certain shoot, this means you can then set up your next part of the shoot.

Fashion

Fashion photography is a genre of photography which is devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion. Fashion photography is most often conducted for advertisements or fashion magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair or Elle. To make the best decisions completing a fashion photo shoot you may need to follow. First of all you need to make sure you're organised and prepared for what you want to shoot, if not your model(s) performance will have a significant difference compared to if you were prepared. Fashion photography is all about clothes and beauty therefore you need to make sure you have all the props and correct clothing which may look good on your model. You can choose if you want to get your model to pose or not, if you want them too it maybe a good idea to look into poses from professional fashion magazines such as Vogue. A studio is an ideal place to to perform a fashion photo shoot as photographers can easily control lighting and any other aspect of the shoot. If you're filming from home meaning you can't afford a studio and you also may not be able to buy or rent all the pricey equipment there is a way you can cheat at home. Clear a room in your house that brings in a lot of light, then peg a white sheet across the window. On a bright day you'll have yourself a homemade soft box. Penultimately photography can be done alone however if you do well on your own eventually you maybe able to hire a new person as an assistant. Finally your location is one of the most important things to consider to get the correct shot which is needed. For example if the clothing and beauty style are edgy you may go for an urban setting compared to a spring/summer and natural fashions find a rural environment such as a forest, field etc.

Some examples of fashion photography are shown below.

Photojournalism

Photojournalism may seem like a commodity these days. Most people have a smart phone and every smart phone has a camera, these cameras are good enough to take a picture that can be published on the front page of the New York Times and much more easily on social media and a website. At its core, photojournalism is serious journalism. There are many things in which you can do to make the photos you get better, first is planning, there is no point in trying to shoot when you don't know what you're doing as you won't have the correct equipment to do so. Pay attention to what's happening and think who is the most likely to provide you with the most interesting visual opportunities. Next is timing, a lot of photojournalism comes down to waiting. You need to be paying attention constantly looking for visual details that will explain what's relevant to the viewer. Sometimes when you're on a case the thing what you need to film might actually happen more than once meaning as long as you are ready to film you can make compare the two together and pick the best one. Even if you miss the amazing shot, something is most likely to happen straight after it meaning it's wouldn't be over if you weren't ready for the first shot. Next is exposure, yes its about artistic expression but the most important thing is that people can actually see what's happening in the film / image. Viewers expect reality from photojournalism, shooting in RAW mode makes it easier. When you arrive at your destination set your camera up with the correct lighting exposure so when the shot comes you don't need to mess with it, meaning this is giving you more time. This can also be linked towards the shots being in focus or not, make sure that every shot is in focus as your viewers are depending on it. Finally are your rights, if you're in public it's important to know the rights of the people you're photographing. You need to be very careful taking pictures of ordinary citizens. It's good to come prepared expecting something to occur so be ready. Finally make sure you don't take photojournalism casually, what you report can change the lives of people who are represented in your photographs and the people who see them, approach the field with the respect is deserves.

An example of photojournalism is shown below.

Portraiture

There are many tips and tricks which can be used when doing portraiture photography, the first one is Expression, a lot of people always forget that portraits without a real expression doesn't connect with the viewer. Everybody wants to see something which seems genuine and not something ' cheesy '. This can be argued to be more important than the location of the shoot, the expensive equipment and the lighting. Make sure your model / actor is comfortable before shooting as this is what the viewer will be looking for. Next is composition, the purpose of composing images is to attract the viewer's eye straight to the most important part of the image, most common would be the subject's face and more specifically the eyes. This is also very important as this brings in depth and rule of thirds to the image. It has been proven that the eye is most attracted to four different points of an image, sticking with these four points will help frame the subject the best it can. Most images are 2D ( Two dimensional ), to make these 3D and to make the subject look as though its coming out of the frame there has to be depth in the image. Next is the lighting in the image, the best images come out with artificial light as well as natural light, this is why window light is very popular when doing portraiture photography. Also when you're shooting outside have the subject facing the light source. The second rule about lighting is the time of the day, the golden hour is a real thing to consider, it;'s free and could be argued it is the best quality light any photographer will use if used appropriately. Next is the lens you use, make sure you choose the correct focal length as its very important. The longer the focal lengths, the more flattering the it is for the subject and the shallower the depth of field will be. Finally is complimenting colours, below is a picture showing different colours.
Below are a few examples of portraiture photography.

As you can see in the images above lots of the topics I have wrote about are included in the images for example the lighting and the different colours.

High Street Studio Work

Street photography requires a lot of practice and the more you do it the easier it eventually will be. The approach is much easier than other types of photography. Perception is one of the most important factors you should consider when completing high street photography. Perception requires a creative eye for detail and is an attentive effort, this creates a decisive moment, taking you to the next level. Strong street photos come from powerful ideas and emotions captured in a simplistic manner. It comes down to perception to force yourself out with your camera to capture decisive moments that unfold in front of you.

There are many things in which you can do to help yourself get better at High Street photography, one of these is choosing the correct lens, if you want to look inconspicuous you're going to need to get up close to the shot you want to take, use a wide angle lens . Many street photographers choose a compact camera that's less confronting than a large DSLR, the advantages being smaller, discreet and lightweight meaning you can take it almost anywhere, getting onto the next tip being take your camera anywhere, street photography is spontaneous and can happen at anytime of the day. Practice makes perfect, you don't want to miss a good opportunity by not having your camera with you. The ' decisive moment ' is a term used in high street photography meaning you only get a second to capture the photo, so be prepared. The next trick is to get close to your subjects, using a wide angle lens enables you to get very close to your subject. The advantage of using a wide angle lens gives the viewer a sense of being there in the moment. You'll also blend in with the crowd as part of the environment, rather than standing out across the street as people may think you're taking a picture of them. Many people don't like street photography as they think a lot of people won't like their picture getting taken, but if you wait for them to be in the shot and be discreet about it, they won't even realise.

Below are a few example of High Street Studio Work.

This is my favourite of the two, this is because of the depth of field in the photo as well as the leading lines effect making you straight away look down the road.

This is also a clever image, it shows the shadows and it is the first thing which you look at in the image.

Architectural

There are many ways in which you can prepare yourself to complete an architectural photo shoot, one of these is light - you need to be sensitive to the direction of the light as this can increase contrast, shadows, textures and reflections. High levels can be bad for cameras as it can trick them into exposing the scene incorrectly, photographers can overcome this by applying exposure compensation. Next it is good to have a wide angle lens as it is ideal for this genre of photography as it lets photographers to frame the entire building within its environment. Architectural photography isn't all about photos of exterior buildings. It can be extremely difficult to correctly white balance an interior, especially ones that are reliant on various forms of artificial lighting meaning compensate accordingly. When the sun goes down a new form of architectural photographer can come out. Night shoots can be very dramatic and atmospheric too, but when doing them make sure that there are still some aspects of light around as this adds more tone to the background and helps to illuminate big details. If you're a tourist in a foreign country do some research before shooting as it will help you where to shoot or where to go for a certain photo you might want to shoot.

A few examples of architectural photography are shown below.

Illustration

An appropriate illustration photograph will immediately tell the reader what it's all about, for example on an advertisement - telling them what's for sale. To make these easier for the reader to view and read there are a few things which can help the producers, first of all lighting is one of the most important things to consider when doing illustration photography, as it can be used to highlight or reveal form, creating an impression of three dimensions when it's actually only two dimensions. The trick is to always use side lighting, not front lighting. If you're struggling for lighting you can use artificial lighting bouncing it off a white surface or use a soft box instead. If you're trying to illustrate something e.g. a flower artificial lighting maybe a necessity so don't worry about using it. Be careful about the background, make sure it's a good one, you don't want to have a good photo then the background ruin it.

Fine Art

Before work can become fine art the artist has to have the vision of what they think their work will look like. Fine art is about an idea, message or an emotion. The artist usually has something that they want put out to the world. The idea or message could be something random for example the word ' abandon ' or it could turn into a hypothesis from a statement like ' exploring the way the moon affects the tides '. When you compare your work together there needs to be similarities, this is so your work is consistent and therefore it demonstrates your vision and your goal towards it. Finally you will need to have an artist statement, showing and telling the reader what is your work about, why you created it and how.

Documentary

Documentary photography usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle events or environments both significant and relevant to history and historical events as well as everyday life.

To be a documentary photographer you need to be very patient as you cannot control or barely control timing, lighting or the subject matter itself. You have to be quick to recognise and respond to a wide range of situations as you do not want to miss any important moments which you could capture. To be a documentary photographer you first of all need to choose a specific area that you wan't to capture and then put a lot of time researching thoroughly into it. This can be argued to be the most difficult phase of the process as you need to pick who is going to be the centre of attention. For example it could be your grandparents, maybe perhaps about WW1 or WW2. Regardless if you know the subject or not make sure you do research about it as it will help you in the long run. Next is getting prepared, make sure you know what type of equipment you will need to shoot and rent / borrow from somebody you know. Also obtain permission as you need it, for example if you're shooting about a business you can't just walk in the office and start shooting. Penultimately embrace your role as a storyteller, you have the responsibility of telling your subjects story remember you are documenting. Finally it's all about presentation, this is where you get to show your work off, choose the most powerful images you have collected but make sure they add something to your subject matter.

Task 2

For my second task I was asked to show one demonstration of any application of photography of my choosing, for this task I have chosen high street studio ( Street Photography ). As I have said earlier within the blog, it is good to edit photos when completing a street photography shoot. I shot this photo on a Canon DSLR so I could have the best possible outcome. The photo below is before I took time to edit it however I think it is a really nice photo to begin with anyway. I believe that the leading lines effect in this photo makes it and it looks a good image for street photography.

Below is the edited version, I think it looks a lot better as it creates more depth to the photo and makes it stand out more, especially the reflection on the ground from the lampost above.

Conclusion

In this blog I think that I have given a lot of evidence and facts about the many aspects of photography out there and I have chosen a specific topic to go into and I have got a decent image out of it.
